Just received this advice from Mio support.
Thank you for contacting the Mio Team. Part of the loss of features in the map upgrade is the ability to add custom points of interest to your unit. There is no way to add custom points of interest to your unit now that the map upgrade has been added.
This information does not appear to be included in Mio's list of lost facilities when the update is applied however. MIO Updaters - be aware!

I just successfully added Navman CSV POI files from this site into my new Mio Moov M300, via the included MioMore 2008 application.
Thanks to all the forum members who pointed me in the right direction! The big clue was Navman compatibility.
For some strange reason, the MioMap CSV files didn't work when I tried those. Go figure!
