I'm interested in purchasing an iPhone navigation app. Does anyone have any recommendations. Right now I'm leaning towards Navigon. Also, is it possible to use custom POI's?

There is all ways the map application that is built in to the Iphone, that has been really handy, the only draw back is you can't add extra POI's to it.

I never heard of Navigon. I have a Garmin GPS. I also use CoPilot Live for iPhone. It has quite reliable maps, extra POIs, spoken voice directions, speed-variable zoom, customized trip status displays, including travel time, ETA and remaining distanceand. I like automatic portrait and landscape display switching.
It is available in the itunes store.

I have heard a lot of good things about the Navigon, AT&T Navigator and Gokivo. All with different functionality, worth checking out though.

The tomtom in car kit is expensive, but it comes with its own GPS chip and aerial, so that you can use a ipod touch or iphone v1.0 (non 3g version).

My friend occasionaly uses his iphone for navigation. He has few different applications. Unfortunately, all of them discharge his battery in about 30-40 minutes.
Essentialy it's not as good as a good, stand-alone GPS unit.

I have had it last a lot longer. If you are in the car, make sure you get a car charger for it, then you will never have to worry about that. Mine does get a little hot, and I don't use it for long at a time. Usually just to get my bearings, and then switch it off again. Google maps is quite good for that.

Depending on where you are driving, you are going to need to get the full tom tom kit, with the car kit which contains a full GPS chip. The iPhone uses AGPS, so it has to be near a cell tower for it to work. It is not good outside of that area.

It would be more useful to actually say why Sygic or any other app is bad, rather than just saying your opinion.

I have Tomtom, Igo8, Sygic and Navigon. Tomtom is good and includes spoken street names but does not have ipod control. Igo8 has realistic view and is nice interface but does not have spoken street names or ipod control. I haven't used Sygic yet. I found Navigon the best as it has ipod controls for playing music while navigating. It also has spoken street names. The only prob I have is that it does not have camera warning installed. Trying to see how to do it.
Overall, Navigon is my fav on the iPhone.

I have sygic on my n82 and I find it much better than tomtom. It does everything tomtom does, but with a nicer and faster interface
