Been pa-rousing the web for the last couple of days and think I have it figured out. From what I have gathered, if you want to have sound and symbol included in your file you would have one directory with three items in it. The first being the Garmin CSV file, the second being the BMP file and the third being the Garmin MP3 audio alert file.
They "all" have to have the same name:
Speed_Trap-USA.csv
Speed_Trap-USA.bmp and
Speed_Trap-USA.mp3
(Download all 3 Garmin files here: http://www.gps-data-team.com/poi/united_states/safety/index.php?poi_data=safety&file=Speed_Trap )
The Garmin's POI loader will link all three Garmin files when it uploads it to your Garmin. Haven't had a chance to test so correct me if wrong.

| The GPX file is the Garmin specific version of the CSV one. You don't need both.

| When using the POIUploader application, it is this that merges the three items (data, image and audio files) together and uploads it to your device. The CSV file is what holds the co-ordinates thus is essential.

and please someone correct me if i am wrong, but it seems like there is no difference (at least on stuff downloaded from this site) between csv files and gpx files, you need either or, but not both, and it doesnt matter which one you download.
so you need
speed_trap.mp3
speed_trap.bmp
and EITHER
speed_trap.csv
OR
speed_trap.gpx
the POI loader program will do the rest for you, and your garmin will warn you when you drive near a speed trap. Sweet...

|
|
| I have just recently purchased a Garmin Nuvi 285WT to replace a Garmin C340. I downloaded numerous POI files for the C340. I am trying to do the same for the new 285wt. I travel in a motor home and want such as the Walmart, etc. overnight stopping places.

Jimw, why don't you simply reuse previously downloaded POI files?
You can load all previously downloaded POI files using the POI Loader, or simply copy your existing POI.gpi to your new Garmin unit. You can also rename your old poi.gpi, as explained here.
