| I have found that 500 meters for school zones and 150 meters for speed cameras work well. Red light camera warnings aren't of much use, since I wouldn't run a red light regardless if it was camera protected or not.

Here is what I use in a city:
Accident black spot alerts - 400 m
Low Bridges - 225 m
Mobile speed camera - 250 m
Red Light Camera - 150 m
School Zones - 200 m
Fixed Speed Camera - 150 m
( all are available here: POI Updates)
I drive a truck so the low bridge warning is good for me all though I had to get rid of all heights above my truck as the "false" warnings were driving me nuts.
Another thing I did was add custom audio alerts to the files i.e. "red light camera" or for school I have just "school ahead" but am going to change that to simply "school"
I hope that helps.
Vic

You can set distance in POI loader (Garmin) when you are uploading POI in to the device or leave it "auto" (how I do)
