My Nuvi 660 works perfectly when a remote antenna is attached but frequently has issues finding satellites (and staying in communication) using the flip up antenna. Today standing in the middle of a parking lot, absolutely no obstructions the 660 couldn't find any satellites. I turned the unit on/off several times even tried the reset. I fliped the antenna into multiple positions (even off) with no effect.

Is this a common issue and is there s fix short of sending the Nuvi back to Garmin for a checkup?

I'm thinking the antenna connection to the unit is fine since the remote antenna works properly so there must be some kind of problem with the built in antenna.
